Abstract
Vanya + Vanya: Two Plays is a comparative theatrical production that presents Anton Chekhov's Uncle Vanya alongside Howard Barker's reinterpretation of the same classic. Directed by Rahman Engineer, the production examines how a timeless dramatic work can be reimagined through different theatrical styles and historical contexts. By juxtaposing realism with a modern interpretive approach, the performance explores themes of unfulfilled ambition, family relationships, desire, isolation, and the changing nature of dramatic expression. The production serves as both an artistic performance and an academic study in adaptation, interpretation, and contemporary theatre practice.

Vanya + Vanya: Two Plays is a comparative theatrical production that brings together two distinct interpretations of Uncle Vanya Anton Chekhov's 1897 realist classic and Howard Barker's 1993 contemporary adaptation. While Chekhov's version portrays the quiet frustrations, unrealized dreams, and emotional conflicts of a family living on a rural estate, Barker reimagines the same narrative with a bold, psychological, and provocative theatrical style.
