Abstract
A student training presentation documenting Chhau classes conducted under the guidance of Shashadhar Acharya, highlighting traditional Indian martial dance techniques and movement-based theatre practice.
Description
Chhau Demonstration is a practical presentation of Chhau, a traditional Indian martial dance form originating from the regions of Odisha, Jharkhand, and West Bengal. The demonstration showcases the distinctive techniques of Chhau, including vigorous body movements, dynamic leaps, martial exercises, stylized gestures, rhythmic footwork, and expressive choreography. Integrating elements of dance, martial arts, and folk traditions, the performance emphasizes physical strength, agility, coordination, and dramatic expression. Presented as part of the National School of Drama's practical training programme, the demonstration highlights the role of Chhau in developing an actor's body control, movement vocabulary, stage presence, and understanding of India's rich traditional performance heritage.
