The Tempest is the final complete play written solely by William Shakespeare, believed to have been composed around 1610–1611. Set on a remote island, it tells the story of Prospero, the exiled Duke of Milan, who uses magic to bring his enemies to the island after a violent storm. Through themes of revenge, forgiveness, reconciliation, justice, illusion, colonialism, and the transformative power of knowledge, the play explores human nature and political authority. Combining romance, fantasy, and philosophical reflection, The Tempest is widely regarded as Shakespeare's farewell to the stage and remains one of his most frequently studied and performed works.
