Abstract
The Seagull (सीगल) is a Hindi adaptation of Anton Chekhov’s classic play, presented by the National School of Drama, New Delhi. The drama explores unfulfilled ambitions, artistic struggles, complex relationships, and generational conflict among a group of artists and intellectuals living on a country estate. Through characters such as Irina Arkadina, Konstantin Treplev, Nina, and Trigorin, the play reflects on love, ego, creativity, and the painful gap between dreams and reality. The NSD production reinterprets Chekhov’s realism in a contemporary Indian theatrical context while retaining the emotional depth and thematic universality of the original work.
Description
Neel Chaudhuri, who adapted, designed, and directed this production, is a theatre practitioner and educator associated with the National School of Drama. His work is known for blending classical texts with modern staging sensibilities and for emphasizing ensemble performance, visual storytelling, and actor-centered direction.
