Abstract

Puppets of the Time is a student production presented by the 11th Batch Students of the National School of Drama, Theatre-in-Education (TIE) Wing, Tripura. The production credits Dr. Suwarn Rawat with script, design and direction. The production incorporates puppetry, dance, music and sound effects, costume, lighting, stage management and other theatrical elements. Performances were scheduled for 29, 30 and 31 August 2024 during morning and matinee shows at Sukanta Academy, Agartala, with an open show on 31 August 2024 at 6:30 PM. The production was presented for invited schools including Shishu Bihar H.S. School, Maharani Tulsibati Girls' H.S. School, and Maa Anandamayee Vidyapeeth School. Puppets of Time intertwines two central narratives highlighting ethical dilemmas, personal conflicts, and the themes of time and its impact on individuals. The first storyline unfolds at a press event for Kevin Carter, whose Pulitzer Prize-winning photo sparks intense debates about the ethics of his work. To juxtapose Kevin Carter’s controversy, another story unfolds regarding the Chipko Movement of the second half of the 20th century, and that narrative shows the side effects of deforestation and deteriorating human and animal life.

Description

Dr. Suwarn Rawat, born in Uttarakhand, is a distinguished figure in the performing arts. He holds a Master’s in Performing Arts from the National School of Drama and completed a Film Composition course at the Film & Television Institute of India, Pune. As one of the founding members of NSD’s Theatre in Education Company, Dr. Rawat has made significant contributions to the field. He earned a PhD in Theatre and received the Senior Research Fellowship from the Ministry of Culture, Government of India. His academic career includes serving as a professor at the Centre for Folk Performing Arts & Culture at HNBG Central University, Srinagar, Uttarakhand, and as Head of the Department of Performing Arts at Tripura University. He has also served as a consultant for the PG Diploma in Theatre Studies at Uttarakhand Open University, Haldwani, Nainital. Dr. Rawat is internationally recognized, having represented India in cultural exchanges at the Arts Centre in London, UK, and at the International Theatre Festival in Warsaw, Poland. His contributions extend beyond theatre to television and film, earning him the prestigious Mohan Upreti Samman.
