Abstract

The production presents episodes from the Ramayana centred on the character of Indrajit, interpreted through the traditional Tamil folk theatre form of Therukoothu, combining music, movement, narration, and stylised performance conventions.

Description

Purisai Kannapa Sambandan is a renowned Therukoothu practitioner, director, and guru, closely associated with the Purisai Therukoothu tradition of Tamil Nadu. As the director of Indrajit, he guided the production with a strong emphasis on traditional performance vocabulary, rigorous physical training, musical discipline, and narrative clarity rooted in folk aesthetics. His work is recognised for preserving and transmitting the classical structure of Therukoothu while mentoring younger performers through pedagogical, performance-oriented processes within institutional theatre training contexts.
