Abstract

A student demonstration showcasing the principles and techniques of Kalaripayattu as part of theatre movement training, conducted under the guidance of Mr. Sumesh P. B. at the National School of Drama.

Description

Kalari demonstration is a practical presentation of Kalaripayattu, the ancient martial art tradition of Kerala and one of the oldest martial systems in the world. The demonstration showcases its fundamental techniques, including body conditioning, flexible movement patterns, footwork, combat sequences, weapon training, and disciplined breathing practices. Emphasizing strength, agility, balance, coordination, and mental focus, the performance illustrates the integration of martial discipline with theatrical movement. Presented as part of the National School of Drama's practical training programme, the demonstration highlights the significance of Kalaripayattu in developing an actor's physical awareness, expressive movement, stage presence, and overall performance skills while preserving an important element of India's traditional performing arts heritage.
