Abstract
Abhijnanasakuntalam (The Recognition of Shakuntala) is one of the greatest works of classical Sanskrit literature, written by Mahakavi Kalidasa. The play narrates the love story of King Duṣyanta and Sakuntalā, whose marriage is disrupted by a sage's curse causing the king to forget her. A lost signet ring eventually restores his memory, leading to their reunion with their son Bharata. Renowned for its poetic beauty, emotional depth, and depiction of nature, the play explores themes of love, separation, destiny, memory, forgiveness, and reunion. It is regarded as a landmark of Indian dramatic literature and has influenced theatre, literature, dance, and performance traditions worldwide.
Description
Prof. Vidushi Rita Ganguly is an eminent Hindustani classical vocalist, theatre director, composer, scholar, and educator. Associated with the National School of Drama, she is known for integrating classical Indian music, dance, and dramatic traditions into theatrical productions. Her work emphasizes the preservation and contemporary presentation of India's classical performance heritage through innovative stagecraft, musical direction, choreography, and theatre education. She has directed numerous productions that combine literary excellence with rich musical and visual aesthetics.
